Emily Explains: Knitting for the first time

You have one day left to pick a New Year’s Resolution. Is anyone’s resolution to learn how to knit? Knitting is a great new craft to learn as we enter the quiet winter season and Berroco.com has some great how-to, beginner videos in the archives to learn from!

First choose a yarn. Berroco has LOTS to choose from. I would recommend something thick, soft, and squishy like Berroco Peruvia Quick or something big and colorful like Berroco Gusto, but the decision is entirely up to you : )

Next you will need to buy needles that are an appropriate size for your yarn! This will be recommended on the yarn’s label under the title knitting gauge.

Once you have your needles and yarn, you are ready to cast on!

Then the first stitch to learn is the knit stitch. Amanda, a previous designer on the Berroco team, made a beautiful video describing how to work this stitch.

A perfect first project would be something like Wood Lily. It is a free scarf pattern knit in Berroco Gusto, but could easily be substituted with Berroco Peruvia Quick or Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky. The scarf is knit in garter stitch, which is worked by knitting every row.

When you complete the number of rows or inches suggested in your pattern it is time to bind off, a technique demonstrated below.

And that’s all there is to it!

Happy New Year!

Emily
