Amy’s Thread: Super-Quick Gift Knitting

Are you knitting any gifts this year? Every year I promise myself I won’t this time, but every year I get a gentle nudge from a friend or family member who would really appreciate it and I end up knitting into the 11th hour of the holiday season. So what is the perfect gift?

For me, the perfect knitted gift is a hat – preferably a quick-to-knit chunky weight hat that flies off the needles. Hats are a great way to gift a little warmth to someone, they don’t require matching pieces (unlike socks or mittens) and they don’t take too much yarn either. Here is a round up of a few of my favorites from the last few seasons:

Do you have any g0-to gift knitting project ideas? We’d all love it if you’d share in the comments below.

Happy knitting!

  1. I’ve done what I call my “Holiday Gift Extravaganza” of knitting for several years now. Last year it was a dozen slouchy hats — 8 in Ultra Alpaca (for the New Englanders) and 4 in Remix (for the Californians). This year I’m using up stash to make simple garter stitch rib cowls with stockinette rolled hems — only two and an eighth to go! (couldn’t keep my eyes open quite long enough last night…)

  2. Headbands! Warm, woolly, and great for the “hatphobic”. This year I’ll try the Ball Cap Earwarmer too, for the folks who want to wear their baseball caps all year.
