When it comes to pattern writing, Lynn Venghaus is particular about what should be included – end of row stitch counts, yardage for a long-tail cast on, predetermined decreases – the more information, the better. Poorly written patterns are her pet peeve! If you decide to knit one of her designs, you won’t have to worry about it being unclear.
Lynn’s Celtic Cables Hood would be a great pattern to start with, especially if you live somewhere cold. It’s a quick knit that can be made in the chunky weights of either Berroco Comfort or Vintage. Construction is easy, too. The hood is worked flat, producing a cabled rectangle that is folded in half and seamed. You can choose to keep it simple or add I-cord ties and a tassel. Either way, it’ll protect your head and neck from any harsh winter winds.
How did you come up with this design?
My friend, Amy, saw a swatch I knitted with this particular series of twists and she suggested I make a hood featuring it and share the pattern with her. When I showed the prototype of the hood to my high school class, the girls went crazy for it. They begged me to write it up.
How did you choose the yarn?
Chunky yarn was chosen for several reasons: so one repeat of the cable would be sufficient to fill the space needed and so the project would be quick and warm. I’ve made sweaters, blankets and hats with Berroco in the past, and I like the colors and the quality. Also, the price was right.
Any funny stories?
I enjoy listening to audio books while knitting. I got into trouble with that a while back, though. I started listening to The Count of Monte Cristo around 7:15 pm and was still really into my knitting project when I realized the sun was coming up!
What’s your favorite project you’ve ever made?
My most recent favorite project is my Sequoia Trees hat. There are two of these giant trees across the street from my home and they greet me in all their majesty every time I pass the windows or walk out the front door. I wasn’t sure I could create a Fair-Isle design worthy of them, but I gave it a try and succeeded. It is one of the most popular patterns at my LYS!
