After several years working for Gucci and Vogue Knitting, among others, Margeau Soboti decided to focus on independent knitwear design. Her first book, Margeau Chapeau, comes out soon and she’s already working on a second!
Margeau’s latest design, Free Bird, is a beautiful, oversized top knit in Berroco Folio. Knit in flat pieces, the front is worked from each side to the center and seamed down the middle. The sleeves are picked up and also knit flat, then seamed along with the sides of the garment. It’s a perfect design for showing off Folio’s great drape!

How did you come up with this design?
I really do love simplistic silhouettes, something that you can just thrown on at any time. I was inspired by some of my favorite designers, like The Row and Alexander Wang, to create something simple and easy to wear.
Did you make it for anyone in particular?
I currently design for Chelsea Yarns, a yarn shop in New Jersey, and the owner asked me to create something with Folio. This yarn has the perfect drape for something flowy and I thought a dipped-hemline tunic would be a flattering look for all shapes and sizes.
Any funny knitting stories?
One time while traveling to Colorado, I was going through the baggage check. I was carrying on my luggage and of course, my knitting. All of a sudden, the security guard asked me to come to the side and started going through my bag. Thoughts were RACING through my head, “What could possibly be in my bag that I have to get searched?” Then the guard pulls out my knitting bag and in sight was a giant pair of Fiscar scissors (which are not allowed in carry-on luggage) and written on the side of them “FABRIC ONLY.” The guard smirked and said, “Looks like you’ll be busy on the plane!” And he let me keep them and warned that I not bring them on another flight!
If you could knit/crochet something for anyone in the world it would be…?
If I could knit for anyone in the world, I would knit for both of the Olsen twins. I have admired their style for as long as I can remember. It is inspiring to see two people my age with such success, style and grace.
