Amy’s Thread: For the Boys

Guys get a reputation of being hard to knit for. It has been my experience that they are rather selective about what they will actually wear, but that makes it that much more satisfying when you knit a hat and he actually wears it.

Gift knitting season is sneaking up on us all so I did a little rounding up of a few favorite (free) patterns that I think he’ll really appreciate.

For Little Ones:

Truck is the classic little boys sweater. It has everything the little guys want, an easy simple crew neck shape and a sweet truck motif for style.

Biff, a boy’s puffer jacket has a bright lining knit right in, cleverly forming pockets for fiber fill. It’s the big boy version of the baby jacket, Baffin, from booklet #292 DK Baby.

Fayerye (pronounced “fairy”) features a sweet floral embroidery detail for girls, but I think you could leave it plain or maybe mix in some more stripes and this hat would work well for a little guy, too.

And for the Not-So-Little Ones:

Larry‘s garter stitch panels add subtle texture to this understated men’s pullover with a mock turtleneck. The size range (36-40-44-48-52)”  makes it a great choice for the hard-to-please.

Aram is a classic Aran designed by Norah Gaughan, shown here in Berroco Comfort…you could work this one up in Blackstone Tweed, Vintage or Ultra Alpaca, too.

Tinson (shown at the top of the page) is a great, quick knit for guys of all ages shown in Berroco Peruvia. It’s a good, last-minute gift that’ll make someone feel really special.

Are you knitting gifts for your loved ones this year? I’d love to hear what you’re making, leave a comment and tell us about it.

Happy Knitting!

    1. Hi Elise! Vintage would be lovely, comfort would work fine, so would Blackstone Tweed or Ultra Alpaca if you’re not afraid of handwashing.

  1. Very cool pictures and pattern! Reblogged on Facebook. Tinson, Larry and Fayerye instantly made it on my “wanting to knit next” list.
With regard to your Christmas question: the man in my life wants nothing but socks (which I refused to knit so far as he has a size 15 …).
