I was very excited when I received my copy of Mary Jane Mucklestone‘s new book, Fair Isle Style. An admired colleague and personal friend, Mary Jane is our secret weapon when it come to photo shoots. She’s been our stylist for the last few years, choosing the clothes and jewelry to best show off our knitwear. Her consummate eye and ability to keep a view of the big picture is invaluable.
Mary Jane’s love of color and whimsy along with her love of Fair Isle knitting come across beautifully in this book. Several of the designs are her own, while she also acted as curator and editor – gathering the remaining designs from an impressive spectrum of fellow designers like Ysolda Teague, Gudrun Johnson and Nancy Bush. I was very happy to be asked to contribute a design as well.
My Mareel Shrug is worked almost seamlessly (there are 2 seams) in Berroco Ultra Alpaca. I chose high contrasting color on a neutral background, but with over 70 colors to choose from your options are almost limitless.

WOW, I am too afraid to try any colour work other than a simple stripe. I had tried making a stranded fingerless glove but my “floats” were super tight and it distorted my pattern…..:(

I love the color knitting of fair isle knits. Would welcome the book.
This contest was almost a year ago! I found this blog because I just bought this book with no knowledge of the contest. I saw this shrug and really want to make it but….it’s not graded for other sizes! I’m a 44 bust…..45-46 with ease…..and I”m not sure how to go about enlarging the pattern. I’m a new knitter but am pretty sure I could follow any instructions for enlarging if you think it can be done? Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks, Paula
Hi Paula,
Unfortunately, this construction is somewhat unusual, which would make enlarging it more difficult. Also, this isn’t a Berroco pattern (just a pattern knit in our yarn), so we’re aren’t familiar with the instructions. However, you could try asking people on Ravelry for suggestions.
Thank you. I’ll see what I can find out on Ravelry.
Love Fair Isle…such a classic!
