Norah’s Knits: Fair Isle Style – Win a book!

I was very excited when I received my copy of  Mary Jane Mucklestone‘s new book, Fair Isle Style.  An admired colleague and personal friend,  Mary Jane is our secret weapon when it come to photo shoots. She’s been our stylist for the last few years, choosing the clothes and jewelry to best show off our knitwear. Her consummate eye and ability to keep a view of the big picture is invaluable.

Mary Jane’s love of color and whimsy along with her love of Fair Isle knitting come across beautifully in this book. Several of the designs are her own, while she also acted as curator and editor – gathering the remaining designs from an impressive spectrum of fellow designers like Ysolda Teague, Gudrun Johnson and Nancy Bush.  I was very happy to be asked to contribute a design as well.

My Mareel Shrug is worked almost seamlessly (there are 2 seams) in Berroco Ultra Alpaca. I chose high contrasting color on a neutral background, but with over 70 colors to choose from your options are almost limitless.

  1. WOW, I am too afraid to try any colour work other than a simple stripe. I had tried making a stranded fingerless glove but my “floats” were super tight and it distorted my pattern…..:(

  2. I love Ms. mucklestone’s modern twist to colorwork. Having a copy of her book for my own would be perfect!

  3. Ultra Alpaca is an amazing yarn–to knit with and to wear. I would love to win so I can have the challenge of choosing colors for your lovely vest!

  4. I love this book. There are so many terrific, colorful patterns. I just made my first colorwork hat, so I’m excited to try my hand at a larger project this time. Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. Nice looking book. As a newbie to fair isle there’s a lot to motivate me to be brave. Thanks for featuring it. I also like today’s featured pattern, with its animal print feel.

  8. There is nothing like Fair Isle Style. I’ve loved Fair Isle since I was a child and that was many years ago. Only recently have I braved knitting Fair Isle. I have a long way to go, but I am making progress. Mary Jane’s book would be great inspiration for knitting Fair Isle.

  9. I am working on a vest for my grandson, using Berroco Comfort yarn. This is my first Berroco “experience” and I’m madly in love with this yarn. I’m hoping a Fair Isle sweat we is in my near future!

  10. I love the challenges of Fair Isles, but have very little confidence when it comes to the colour choices and combinations. Being able to work the gorgeous seamless patterns and bold designs would be bonus! Congratulations on your contribution to this book!

  11. I love Fair Isles knitting but have very little confidence when it comes to selecting colours and combinations. Your own design looks beautiful with the bold contrasts. Thank You for this opportunity to win the book.

  18. The more I see of this book the more I am falling in love with all of the patterns! Until last year my attempts at Fair Isle knitting were pretty sad, but I took a class and bought a couple of books and now I’m hooked! Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  19. The Mareel Shrug is beautiful! What a classy use of animal print. I love how the pattern comes together to create tiger eyes.

  20. This looks like a stunning Fair Isle book, and what a great shrug. the patterns have a very up-to-date look while using a very traditional technique.

  21. fair isle is sweet, I’m excited to learn it. I’ve just started a 2 color scarf and its going good, the yarn gets tangled a lot but liking it nonetheless.

  22. What a lovely book – What motivation and a great excuse to learn more about color knitting. I can see many of these projects on family members . Please enter me!

  23. This contest was almost a year ago! I found this blog because I just bought this book with no knowledge of the contest. I saw this shrug and really want to make it but….it’s not graded for other sizes! I’m a 44 bust…..45-46 with ease…..and I”m not sure how to go about enlarging the pattern. I’m a new knitter but am pretty sure I could follow any instructions for enlarging if you think it can be done? Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks, Paula

    1. Hi Paula,

Unfortunately, this construction is somewhat unusual, which would make enlarging it more difficult. Also, this isn’t a Berroco pattern (just a pattern knit in our yarn), so we’re aren’t familiar with the instructions. However, you could try asking people on Ravelry for suggestions.

      1. Love Fair Isle…such a classic!
