What to Knit: Ashley

If you’re like me, you may have noticed the oversized sweater trend and thought, “I could never pull that off.” Unfortunately, I sometimes “think” out loud. Norah overheard and was determined to prove me wrong.

Last week, I got to spend an afternoon being personally styled by Norah (I know – I really have the best job!) in several of the oversized sweaters from our Spring/Summer 2013 collection.  I tried on Takla, Enter, Knicknack, Vizcaya and Leatrice, and Amanda got it all on camera!

I’ve already cast on for a Vizcaya of my own. I hope our video convinces you to keep an open mind about oversized knitting, too.

  1. you are all so cute – I like the side slits in the Takla top (hopefully the slits will stop the shirt from riding up in the back if you know what I mean)

    1. So glad you liked the video, Jennifer! I was really surprised with how nice Takla felt and looked when I had it on. I think it’s a great option for a variety of body types.

  2. I think every sweater looked great on you and like it was knit just for you. My problem is my stomach and I’m short. So I feel like everything will make me look like a round ball.

    1. Thanks, Dana! I have the same concerns with being short and having wider hips and chest. I’ve always stayed away from oversized looks because I was afraid it would make me look wide all over, but this experience really changed my mind. Something like Leatrice might be a good option, because I felt like the center panel was slimming and the longer sides made me look taller.

  3. How nice to see a “real person” modeling those beautiful sweaters instead of a willow tree/stick figure. Ashley looks lovely.

  4. Oh my goodness, every single one of those sweaters is beautiful. I think I actually would look good in any one of them, and I’m chunky, Norah you are a genius, thank you. I want one of each! 🙂

  5. I am working on the sweater Twin from Volume 11 on the right front (armhole split) it is quite confusing. I am making size 38, and when it comes time to bind off for shoulder with 38 stitches. I have to many stitches for that if I just decrease at neckline, and not enough if I decrease both at armhole and neckline. It just states continue neckline decreases as est. K3,k2tog work to last 5 sts ssk, knit 3. What am I missing???? help, help, help

    1. Lynn, I’m sorry to hear you’re having troubles with a pattern. Please contact Martha (patternsupport@berroco.com). She should be able to help you out.

  6. Hi, I really enjoyed seeing all of the oversized sweaters being modeled by Ashley Palumbo. I also liked the Vizcaya for myself, and would like to purchase the pattern. Would you please help me to find it so I can purchase it. So far I have not be able to locate where it is. Vera

  7. What about asking Nora to be the model, because “oversized” for me means it should fit women over size 14? Please tell me if you do a video with her: I’d love that!

    1. In this case, “oversized” actually refers to a style trend that’s been popular lately, though I can see where you might get confused! It’s up to Norah if she wants to be the model, but we do have another “What to Knit” video coming out in a week or two with a size 10 model.
