Knitter’s Spotlight: Hooks & Needles Rap

Have you ever gone to YouTube to learn about a new knitting technique, only to find yourself listening to a song about how much someone loves yarn?  I love these accidental discoveries, so I thought I’d share one of my favorites.

I can’t remember what I was looking for when I came across Yorkshire Yarns“Hooks & Needles” rap this summer.  Whatever it was doesn’t matter, because this video is so much better!  The lyrics are full of clever rhymes about knitting, but that’s not the only reason it’s a must-see.  The execution is amazing and there’s even a cameo by Cat Bordhi!

This might be my favorite rhyme, but it's hard to choose!

As it turns out, the video was a family project.  Shop owner Sonya Acord credits her kids with the idea, which she initially resisted.  Thankfully, she changed her mind!

Here are some other fun facts she shared:

Who is in the video?

The female singer is our 16-year-old daughter, Heather.  The “rapper” with the fuzzy hair is our 22-year-old son, Skyler & the one with the braces is his twin brother, Tyler.  And yes, they ALL knit…continental style!  I asked them to include our Friday night knitting club.  The rest of the folks are their (as they put it) “homies.”  Dad (my hubby) is still hurt because he wasn’t included.  The problem is he has NO rhythm. So we put him behind the camera.

How did you arrange the Cat Bordhi cameo?

I met Cat at one of the TNNA conventions and we hit it off.  We only live about 80 miles apart.  She’s taught in my shop several times and she & my kids have become VERY good friends.

How long did it take to put it all together?

Our kids composed the music & lyrics for the entire thing.  They were in high school & college at the time so it took about six months.

What do your customers think of the video?

They have been asking for more.  We’ve pulled in several new faces – people who were dying to check out this nutty shop.  It’s been SO much fun!

Any plans for a follow up?

I surely hope so! Tyler is busy now as a recording engineer with Atlantic Records.  He’s worked with some of the biggest names in the business since then – Cee Lo Green, Flo Rida, Cody Simpson, etc.   It may be a little more difficult to nail him down, but the plan is to continue the series.

Of course, the Acords aren’t the only ones making entertaining crochet and knitting videos.   I’ve created a playlist on the Berroco Yarn YouTube channel that includes other songs, animations and more. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

You may have noticed that this is a new YouTube channel for Berroco.  It’s the place to go for everything Berroco in 2013.  But there are also some non-Berroco videos, like our Quirky Yarn Videos playlist, that we threw in for fun. Don’t forget to subscribe to see all of our latest videos!
