Yarn Tasting Kit Idea: A crochet Hat

We are sharing ways to use up our Fall/Winter Yarn Tasting Kit! Please check back here tomorrow for more tasting kit projects. If you missed yesterday’s, find it here.

For all you crocheters out there, I wanted to make an easy and versatile slouch hat pattern using the Berroco Fall ’21 home yarn tasting kit. I arranged the yarns in order from heaviest to lightest (with the laceweight Aerial Color worked together with Remix Chunky), and to account for the different gauges when transitioning from one yarn to the next, you work a decrease round.

The heavier yarns have less yardage, so for those especially I wanted to be sure and use up all the yarn, so I didn’t worry about ending those at the end of a round, instead, I just switched to the next yarn wherever the yarn happened to run out. The medium-weight yarns (Topaz, Dulce, and Lucca) had a fair amount leftover – I could have gone on longer but then the hat would have been extremely tall! (It’s already got a generous amount of slouch, or you can fold it over for more warmth.) If you’d like to use up every bit of the yarns, I’d invite you to try the cowl version instead.

HAT (COWL)

Using Lanas Quick and size M / 9 mm hook, loosely ch 42 (48), sl st to join in first ch.

Dc in to 3rd ch from hook (counts as 2 dc) and into each ch to end, sl st to first dc to join—40 (46) dc.

Work in the round in dc until Lanas Quick is used up.

Note:  It’s okay to stop in the middle of a round, and this will allow you to use up all the yarn in the kit.

Work the next (increase) round starting wherever you left off and join with sl st at the original end of rnd, then continue with the increases on the next rnd until all the sts have been worked with the new yarn.

When joining new yarn, end the last dc with the old yarn before pulling the yarn through the last 2 loops on the hook, and instead leave off the old yarn and pull the new yarn through these last two loops.

Join Remix Chunky and Aerial Color held together, and change to size K / 6.5 mm hook.

Inc Rnd 1:  Dc in next 0 (2) dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc; rep from * until all Lanas Quick stitches have been worked with Remix Chunky/Aerial Color—50 (57) dc.

Continue working in dc until Remix Chunky is used up.

Break off Aerial Color. Join Topaz and change to size H / 5 mm hook.

Inc Rnd 2:  Dc in next 6 (3) dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * until all stitches have been worked with Topaz—72 (84) dc.

Continue working in dc until Topaz section measures approximately 2½-3″ / 6.5–7.6 cm for hat, or until Topaz is used up for cowl.

Join Dulce and change to size 7 / 4.5 mm hook, and work even in dc for approximately 2½-3″ / 6.5–7.5 cm for hat, or until Dulce is used up for cowl.

For Hat ONLY:

Join Lucca and work even in dc for 2 rounds.

Dec Rnd 1: Ch 1 (counts as dc), dc in next 3 dc, dc2og, * dc in next 4 dc, dc2tog; rep from * to end—60 dc.

Dec Rnd 2: Ch 1 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 dc, dc2tog, * dc in next 3 dc, dc2tog; rep from * to end—48 dc.

Dec Rnd 3:  Ch 1 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, dc2tog, * dc in next 2 dc, dc2tog; rep from * to end—36 dc.

Dec Rnd 4:  Ch 1 (counts as dc), dc2tog, * dc in next dc, dc2tog; rep from * to end—24 dc.

Dec Rnd 5:  Ch 1 (counts as dc), * dc2tog; rep from * to end—12 dc.

Break off yarn leaving an 8″ / 20 cm long tail.  Thread tail into tapestry needle and draw through last round.  Pull up tightly and secure, then fasten off.

For Cowl  ONLY:

Join Lucca and work even in until Dulce is used up, or desired length.  Fasten off.

FINISHING

For both:  Weave in all ends and block as desired.
