Barrison’s Travels: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

When I invited Barrison to join me on a trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, she asked what she should wear. Hmmm….spring in the U.P.? That could be tricky! I told her it better be warm enough to handle snow, but light enough to be comfortable in the sun. And orange, definitely orange, because something’s always in season and you can never be too careful when you’re surrounded by woods! She decided to knit a hoodie for herself in Berroco Comfort. She named it Keweenaw after the region we were visiting.

Barrison and I flew to Michigan on May 9 and enjoyed a long weekend of sightseeing in (mostly) above-freezing weather. My friend Rebecca was nice enough to host us and Barrison really enjoyed hanging out with her adorable dog, Febea!

Febea & Barrison were fast friends.

Having lived in the Keweenaw for two years, I had a list of must-sees for Barrison, including the Quincy Mine Shaft, the Snow Meter and Brockway Mountain. We started in Houghton and worked our way north to Copper Harbor. We only saw a few flurries along the way!

We hope you enjoy these photos from our trip!

Have you made a Barrison of your own? We’d love to see what your little bear is up to. You can tweet pictures to @berrocodesign with the hashtag #BarrisonBear or #BarrisonsTravels. Be sure to check back to see where Barrison travels next!

  1. Looved seeing this! I spent lots of time in the UP as a child and visited as an adult. About 4 years ago my sister and I took her motorhome on a month long trip in the UP, seeing so many things we remembered and many we hadn’t seen before. We toured an old copper mine and several light houses, waded in COLD Lake Superior, saw the Soo Locks,Tahquamenon Falls, and so much more. Definitely a trip to remember! The UP is so beautiful!!

    1. I couldn’t agree more, Judi! I lived in Houghton for two years and I did a lot of exploring west of Marquette, but there’s still a lot more I’d like to see on future trips.

  2. Say ya to da UP,eh?

My mother in law is from Calumet/Laurium and she spends about 6 weeks in the summer. Every few years we meet up with them – 2013 is our year! We’ll be camping at Lake Fanny Hooe in Copper Harbor. Now I want a pasty and some cookies from Toni’s in Laurium.
