Get to Know Berroco: Company History

“Ever since we were teenagers we worked in the mill, doing various jobs, learning the business, so we got to know the people, and they knew us…” quote from 1994 interview with Philip, Arthur & Strickland Wheelock

Berroco has been in the yarn business for more than 40 years.  But did you know that our company’s roots actually go back two centuries?

Three Sites

From the Daniel Day Mill in 1809 to present day, six generations of Wheelocks have been continuously involved in the American textile industry.  The product has changed from woolen cloth to fine yarns, but the dedication to quality remains.

Watch this video to learn more about our company history, including how we got the name Berroco.

    1. Actually our company has changed from a manufacturer to a distributor, so the yarn is spun elsewhere. What you saw in the video is the hanking process, which is done to some of our yarns for shipping. Sorry for any confusion!

  1. My spouse and I stumbled over here coming from a different page and thought I might check things out.

I like what I see so now i’m following you.
Look forward to looking at your web page for a second time.

  2. Best part of Berroco is the colors. I always come back to Berroco for the colors. Amazing!!

  3. I am having difficulty finding a LYS that carries this yarn. I can’t believe Houston, Texas has no store that carries it. What am I doing wrong? I have tried several zip codes, the search comes back with No Stores Found.

    1. Hi Charlsie! I’m not sure what selections you’ve made for the drop down menus, but when I searched for Houston Tx and Berroco brand, I got a few hits, including Nancy’s Knits (zip code 77096) and Merribee Needlearts (zip code 77066). It’s also possible that you were trying to find a store at a time that our locator was updating itself and so not working properly. Please let me know if you continue to have trouble!

  4. Hi, I want to know about the animal treatment. Do you have a vidéo about that? Do you have a ethical code? Thank your for answering me as soon as possible…

    1. Hi Linda. Berroco is an importer of yarn—we don’t make the yarns and don’t have any sheep (sadly). Our president only works with yarn manufacturers in Italy, Peru, and a few other countries that do have high standards of ethics, but most of the wool is sourced from wide pools.

  5. I just discovered Berroco and would like to order some yarn. I live in France and could not search in France for stores or internet sites. Are there any I noticed that Berroco Remix is from France but I don’t know where to find it.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Mary, Unfortunately we don’t have any distribution in France at the moment, but Loveknitting.co.uk may have Berroco Remix on their site (it’s on their US site and they will ship overseas, but you might get a better deal from the UK version).
