Foundation single crochet is sometimes called a “chainless foundation.” Using this method, you’re essentially making your first row of single crochet at the same time as you’re making your chain. It creates a nice stretchy edge, more flexible than working your first row of single crochet into a regular chain.
Watch the video, or see step-by-step instructions below.
Step 1: Chain 2.

Step 2: Insert hook into the first ch (2nd ch from hook), draw up a loop (2 loops on hook)

Step 3: Yarn over (yo) and draw through 1 loop only (you still have 2 loops on hook). This step creates your first “chain.” You could place a stitch marker on this stitch to find it more easily when we work Step 5.

Step 4: Yo and draw through both loops. First Foundation sc made.

Step 5: Insert hook into both legs of the “chain” stitch and draw up a loop.

Step 6: Yo and draw through 1 loop only (2 loops on hook). This is your next “chain” stitch.

Step 7: Yo and draw through both loops. Another Foundation sc made.

Repeat Steps 5–7 until you have the required number of stitches.
