I love taking a pattern that’s made for a smaller gauge and magnifying it with a bulkier yarn. Especially when it knits up as quickly as this cowl does! Let’s be honest, if you’re a maker like me, right now is about the time where you’re wondering if you can cram another present in the “to make” list. Cowls are the perfect gift giving project. They are simple, easy to make and work up quickly.
My Tyanna cowl uses Wizard instead of Carousel which amplifies the stitch pattern used in the original version.

Modifying the bandana cowl to the bulkier yarn was simple. The pattern starts at the bottom tip and works its way upwards. The increases are uniform and I worked in pattern until I achieved approximately the same width as the original pattern. In reading the pattern, I took the final number of stitches and divided by the gauge # and figured out the length needed.
I then casted on a few stitches at the back until I liked the circumference. I prefer my cowls to fit closer to my neck rather than lay loose. Finally, I worked in the round until I ran out of yarn. I decided to skip the ribbing and I didn’t think it was necessary for this bulkier version!

Here is what I did:
US9 Needle Circular Needle
1 ball of Wizard
Darning Needle to weave in ends
My gauge was around 18 sts to 4″, or 4.5 sts to the inch.
Using the Tyanna instructions work the cowl until you have 107 stitches on your needle.
Cast on 11 more stitches and join in the round: 118 stitches total. (Feel free to cast on more or less stitches at this point, it truly is a personal preference on how close or loose you’d like your cowl to be.) For the pink I added 17sts and the green only 7!

Keep working in pattern until you’ve finished the rest of the ball making sure to leave a long enough tail to bind off and ENJOY!
This cowl makes a great gift and it’s a very quick knit making a perfect project for everyone on your holiday list.
