What Inspires: Magical Movies

When I am at a loss for inspiration, a walk, beautiful music or a good movie can pull me back into my creative spirit. One of my favorite albums to listen to when I am feeling like this is the soundtrack to Amélie. A friend gave it to me when I was in college. We would play the beautiful music through the night in our studio as we worked. I absolutely love it! The funny thing is, I had listened to the soundtrack for a few years before I ever saw the movie!

What Inspires: Frida Kahlo de Rivera

Recently, I’ve been drawn to the color and intensity of Frida Kahlo. As a female artist she is incredibly inspiring. She first began painting during a long and painful recovery from a severe car accident. She would paint in bed, on sketchbooks, her casts and other materials. What Inspires: Sonia Delaunay

In college, I had a wonderful art history teacher who believed that the best way to study great artists was to research their sketchbooks. We spent all our time looking for as many sketches and scribbles as we could find leading up to their great paintings. We rarely even bothered with the final pieces! It really opened my eyes to new artists I had never heard of before – artists I never thought I would appreciate as much as I do now. Sonia Delaunay is one of those artists that continues to inspire me. What Inspires: Norah

I first “met” Norah Gaughan in the book Knitting in America: Patterns, Profiles, & Stories of America’s Leading Artisans by Melanie Falick. That book came out in 1996, but it was probably around 2001-2002, when the Tweedy Aran Cardigan came out in Interweave Knits, that she inspired me to take my knitting beyond rectangles and into garments. By the time Norah came out with Knitting Nature in 2006, I was in total “design crush.”

What Inspires: Good Music

With the deadline looming for our Fall/Winter 2014 photo shoot, we are all sneaking in knitting whenever we can. To keep up my physical and creative energy – and to keep from going crazy – I’ve been consuming copious amounts of coffee, tea, chocolate and good music. Read more
