Designer Spotlight: Evening Whispers by Kam Baker

By day, Kam Baker is the artistan behind Everyday Peacocks, a brand of fancy stitch markers and shawls pins that she refers to as “yarn jewelry.” By night, Kam is a multitasking mom of three, often cooking, cleaning and wrangling kids while knitting. She doesn’t have as much time as she’d like to design, but she does a pretty good job with what she’s got!

Make that a really good job! Kam published Evening Whispers, a beautiful shawl pattern this summer. Delicate but warm, the shawl features a section of stockinette knit in Berroco Folio, a section of seed stitch knit in Boboli Lace and a section of lace the uses both yarns with stranded colorwork. The design is available in two versions – a crescent shape as well as a rounded triangle.

How did you come up with this design?

My friend Lucinda handed me a freshly started shawl one day and said, “Here, finish this.”

Any interesting stories about your process?

My process is a little scattered. Sometimes I see a design in my mind and then feverishly knit and reknit until I get it right. But other times—as for this pattern—I start with the chart. I will map out a design that I think will get me close to what I am seeing in my mind, and then I will swatch it. I block it out and evaluate it, then change anything that’s not quite right. I think I edited and swatched the lace panel for this shawl about three times before it was what I wanted it to be!

How did you decide on the yarn?

When this project was first put into my hands, the choice was obviously already made for me! When I started working on the crescent version of this design, I wanted to repeat this tactile fascination, but also add some delicious color! Lucinda suggested I take a look at the Folio. I fell in love with the sweet softness of it — what a gorgeous mix with the smooth texture and vibrant colors of Boboli Lace! It was perfect!

What’s your favorite thing about knitting?

I think it is the mental stimulation mixed with a creative spirit! I love knitting lace because it is constantly changing most of the time — I feel a bit like I am solving a puzzle as I go along. It keeps my brain active and allows me some brief moments of quiet pride when I get to marvel at the beautiful things I have created. Oh, and yummy yarn…did I mention how much I love yummy yarn?
