I spent most of last weekend knitting, knitting and knitting until I couldn’t knit any more. I was compelled to knit just one more piece for my next volume (that’s Norah Gaughan vol 13). When I first learned how to knit I was pretty frustrated when it came to sewing a sweater together. A fairly accomplished seamstress, I assumed that I should put the right sides of my pieces together and sew with the wrong sides facing me, like you would when sewing a blouse. So you’ve gotten your feet wet on cowls, scarves and other knit accessories and you are working your nerve up to knit a sweater. It seems like a big commitment. Plus you’ve haven’t yet made anything to fit a body. If you’re a little afraid to plunge into the intermediate knitters pool, you might want to consider knitting or crocheting a shrug to ease your way in.

My love of natural fibers came early. The first sweater I ever knit was made from wool yarn I bought at the county fair. Creamy white, right off the sheep, and soaked in its own natural lanolin, the yarn had an aroma I love to this day. Read more
