Knitter’s Spotlight: Kat Coat by JessieAtHome

Kat Coat by Jessie Rayot

When I was a little girl, I would have loved to have a knitted sweater coat like the ones Jessie Rayot made for her four-year-old twins.  Okay, if I’m being totally honest I still want one as an adult!  With beautiful colored panels, a full skirt for spinning and an adorable elfin hood, Rayot’s Kat Coat may look as though it’s straight out of a fairy tale.  But she openly admits her inspiration came from the upcycled sweater coats featured on Katwise.com.

Instead of repurposing old sweaters, Rayot picked up some Berroco Vintage and started knitting…a lot of knitting!  It took more than 100 hours for each coat and even more time to make the pattern for Ravelry.  Still, Rayot says this is one of her favorite projects.

Why did you want to make this pattern?

Look at those kids – they are so happy! How could you not love making kids smile? I plan on making an adult version of the coat with a bulky weight yarn sometime in the future. I want one of my own!

How did you decide on the yarn?

I went into my favorite LYS and told them my crazy idea. I asked what they recommended that was a good quality yarn, machine washable (as it was for my children!) and not too expensive. They highly recommended Berroco Vintage, so I bought it. I am so glad I did. It was my first time using Berroco yarn, and I love it.

How long have you been knitting/crocheting?

My great grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 8. I had learned how to knit in my teens, but didn’t really take to it. About 8 years ago I was working as the on-site artist at a craft store and when my review came around, my boss told me he had to fill in the section for “how can employee improve,” so he said it would be nice if I learned to knit. A week later I was knitting away!

What’s your favorite thing about knitting?

Being limited only by my own imagination. You can knit anything, it’s just a matter of time and lots of trial and error!

Wouldn’t that make a great Halloween costume! And since it’s February now, that gives lots of time to knit.
